Battle to save UK leather museum
25/11/2016
The museum is at risk of closing due to cuts to the budget of the local council, with local people fighting to keep the museum in its current location at Walsall Central Library. A proposed move to another building would see just a fraction of its collection being displayed.
The museum details the history of Walsall’s leather industry and features demonstrations by local craftsmen, where visitors are able to observe them in their workshops.
Residents have already held a demonstration against the proposed move with paper and online petitions gathering more than 4,000 signatures.
Michael Glasson, senior curator at Walsall museum service said: “We have had massive support since the demonstration. People love the leather museum – it’s been a big part of their lives for 30 years.”
