UK: leather museum attracts 40,000
04/01/2013
The museum was opened in 1988 on the site of a Victorian leather factory, and now tells the story of the rise of the town into an international saddle-making centre in the early 1900s. Around 10,000 were employed locally making saddles, bridles and leathergoods, and while the industry has declined over the last century, there are still estimated to be 90 such companies in the town.
The library offers demonstrations on leather craft, as well as an extensive library of leathermaking in the area.
Last year’s visitor numbers were up from 33,000 in 2011.
