Relocation of Cairo tanneries continues

A government-backed initiative to move tanneries from the old district of Cairo to the Robeeky industrial zone on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital is ongoing.

In September, Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister, Tarek Kabil, said the government has already started demolishing some of the tanneries in Old Cairo, as per government approval in 2014.

Local media reports that tanners are suggesting that the one-year period suggested as a time frame for relocating all the tanneries is not long enough. They fear it will force them to undergo temporary shutdowns, which risks losing customers.

Mr Kabil said tanneries who choose not to move to the new district will receive immediate compensation. 18 tannery owners have reportedly accepted this option and received combined compensation of around $4 million.

He added that the ministry plans to "create an industrial leather tanning community based on the highest technological standards to attract investors specialised in this industry and open more export markets for Egyptian leather products."
