French leather project to receive local funding

01/09/2016
The council of the French region of Nouvelle Aquitaine has voted to provide funding to ensure the area’s history of leather artisanship is preserved.

These funds will go towards the Cité du Cuir project, which is due to be completed in Saint-Junien in 2017. The town has a rich history of glove making, with luxury Hermès already operating a facility in the area.

The project, which will be built on the site of a former lambskin tannery, will showcase the town’s leather heritage. It will include a museum, temporary exhibition spaces, training workshops and studios for leather artisans. It is expected to create nearly 100 jobs.

The regional council will provide €400,000 to the project, with a further €2.8 million coming from the EU-administered European Regional Development Fund.
