Company invents “social shoe” for blocking notifications

Footwear retailer Anatomic & Co. have created a shoe designed to encourage face-to-face social interaction by blocking smartphone notifications. The company describe it as the “world’s first social shoe”.

The ‘In Good Company’ shoe was created in conjunction with scientists at University College London (UCL) and allows the wearer to avoid the unwanted distraction of notifications. The classic black leather brogue has a device inside its rubber sole that connects to an app via Bluetooth and blocks all non-emergency notifications.

“The shoe is a physical manifestation of our mission – to make the world a more sociable place to live, by making the world’s most social shoes. After the beta test we are planning to roll this out further so more people can be in good company,” says Moema Pimental, Anatomic & Co. managing director and chief designer.

“By subverting the principles of the ‘Internet of Things’ and bringing mindfulness closer to technology I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to see more products like this over the coming years,” said UCL Advances’s Deputy Director Dr Alastair Moore.

The ‘In Good Company’ shoe will be launched via a Kickstarter campaign and the company hopes to release the product in 2017.
