Leather cutting “two industrial revolutions” behind the times

Roy Shurling, Director of Lectra North America, has said he believes leather cutting is “two industrial revolutions back”.

Speaking at the 2016 Automotive Leather conference that his company, a specialist provider of automated leather cutting technology, organised in Bordeaux on April 5 and 6, Mr Shurling said that in 2015, 90% of the leather cut for car seats worldwide were cut with dies. He pointed out that the information came from Willy van Looy, global director of advanced manufacturing engineering and cut-and-sew operations at Johnson Controls.

Mr Shurling went on to say that tanners or cut-and-sew service providers who insist on using dies have no way of eliminating gaps of about 3 millimetres between each die. “Eliminate those gaps and you can save about 1.5% of every hide,” he told conference delegates.
