Tata may buy a tannery in Zimbabwe

The diverse Tata Corporation has recently added a new Africa Hides unit to its trading division, with little connection to the better known Tata International, which has its own tannery at Dewas in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking to leatherbiz at the 2016 India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, officials at the African Hides unit said that demand for raw materials, which it brings into India as wet blue or crust without import duty, is high because the price is good and the Tata brand name gives buyers some reassurance on quality.

Tata is currently sourcing most of its African material in Ethiopia, but its representatives at IILF said this is likely to expand in the near future, with Zimbabwe another likely future market. They said Tata, which already has extensive interests in Africa across sectors such as mining, is even considering buying out the owners of an existing supplier in Zimbabwe and running a Tata tannery from there.
