BASF said afterwards that its aim in setting up the seminars was to bring together “key automotive stakeholders” and address with them “emerging trends facing the industry”.
More than 200 participants attended, representing major automotive leather tanneries and automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). BASF’s vice-president for leather chemicals, Alex Wartini, said he believes buyers in the international automotive leather market are becoming increasingly conscious of the need for compliance with environmental, safety and social standards.
Among the products BASF presented to delegates to help them address these questions was a new generation of topcoat system for automotive finishing, which it says offers up to 20% higher durability “compared to the industry benchmark” and meets OEMs’ requirements in terms of volatile organic compounds and consumer safety. It presented the new topcoat system to customers at the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai in September.
