New Italian study shows robustness of leather sector

A new study of major companies in Italy suggests that the tanning industry has come through the economic crisis better than any other.

The study, commissioned by Milan-based investment bank Mediobanca, involved in-depth analysis of around 2,000 major Italian companies. The results showed that companies in the hide and leather sectors have increased turnover by about 33% since the crisis began in 2008.

This compares favourably with industries such as publishing and telecommunications, which have registered declines in turnover of 36% and 24% respectively over the same period.
