Pittards re-purchases its UK tannery
30/06/2015
Pittards was established in Yeovil in 1826 and built a new tannery there in 1964. In 2007, as part of the reorganisation of the business, it completed the sale and leaseback of the facility. Now it is repurchasing the unit with the support of a funding package of more than £2 million from the Lloyds banking group. By regaining ownership, the business can now expand its productivity as and when necessary, Pittards said on making the announcement.
The company employs 210 people in Yeovil, with further job opportunities expected in the coming months as the business continues to expand. It also has manufacturing operations in Ethiopia, including the tannery that won the inaugural global Tannery of the Year award in 2010. In addition, it now has glove manufacturing facilities in the capital, Addis Ababa.
Its tannery in Yeovil processes 2,500 cow hides and up to 70,000 skins per week.
