Packer and tanning group JBS has reported revenues of $11.1 billion for the first quarter of 2015, on which it registered earnings of $460 million. These figures represent increases of 28% and 57.6% respectively compared to the those for the first quarter of 2014.

JBS reports the performance of its tanning group, JBS Couros, as part of the results of its South American business, JBS Mercosul. It said JBS Couros achieved 10% efficiency gains in its production of both wet blue and crust in the course of last year.

In the first quarter of 2015, the JBS Mercosul business unit achieved overall revenues of $2.2 billion, an increase year on year of 18.5%. However, its earnings fell by 36.8% compared to the first quarter of last year to around $125 million. It said an increase in the price of cattle during the quarter was the principal reason for this fall in earnings.

The company said, though, that it had achieved a 6.1% gain in productivity at its abattoirs in Brazil in the course of 2014, while those it runs in Paraguay and Uruguay have increased their productivity by more than 30%.

Commenting on the results for JBS as a whole in the first quarter, group chief executive, Wesley Batista, said: “Our strategy in recent years has allowed us to create a global production set-up. This means that, today, we have a diversified range of value-add products and strong brands throughout the world. And this strategy has allowed us to generate increasingly solid and consistent results.”
