Auditors say Northampton leather courses are “of the highest standard”
An audit exercise at the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) at the University of Northampton has confirmed that it is providing courses “of the highest standard”.

All universities in the UK undergo a five-yearly periodic subject review (PSR) to ensure courses are of a high standard and are sustainably resourced for the next five years.

On completion of the ICLT’s review recently, director, Rachel Garwood, said: “This reaffirms that everything we are doing is right, that we are maintaining a high level of quality teaching and are constantly improving the way we do things.

“Passing the PSR gives us credibility within the industry and means those studying with us, or considering doing so, are assured that we are one of the foremost centres for leather education in the world.”

Ms Garwood went on to say that the ICLT works to make sure its leather education programmes align with industry needs and said the success of its Leather Technology (Professional) MSc course was “a significant contributor” to its success in the PSR.

She explained that future plans include the offer of a a shortened BSc course for tannery employees who cannot afford to be away from work for a year to study.

Auditors commended the ICLT for its use of a virtual learning environment and for embedding its research into taught programmes, highlighting the internationally recognised doctoral research being undertaken there.

The University of Northampton is one of the few universities in the world offering degree courses in leather technology, with the ICLT boasting a 100% employability record for its students.
