More illegal bags sold in Italy than legal, says Aimpes

The president of Italian bag manufacturers association Aimpes has said a new government initiative to crack down on counterfeit leathergoods and bags is “better late than never”.

Giorgio Cannara said: “We began our campaign against imitations in 2006 but were never taken very seriously by those who should have eradicated the malpractice.”

Aimpes estimates that there are 20 million bags sold each year legitimately in Italy, but around 30 million imitations sold on beaches and street corners.

“Now we have the ‘carefree beaches’ operation, but many entrepreneurs have already lost their carefree nature due to lost turnover, layoffs and even the closure of their businesses,” he added.
