Leathergoods prop up Italian bag exports

09/07/2014
The value of exports of bags from Italy rose 4.8% in the first quarter of the year, solely due to leather products, which rose 7% in value compared with a 3% decline in synthetics.

The overall volume declined 0.9%, a trend that has been apparent since 2009, according to AIMPES, the Italian bag manufacturers association.

Exports to Japan and the Russia fell the most – down around 7% in volume and value.
Exports to Germany and the UK rose 10% in value and those to France were also up, this time by 12%. Growth was also noted in China (14%), Hong Kong (8.5%), the UAE (6.8%) and Brazil (49%).

The domestic market continued to suffer. A downturn of 5% to 7% in the consumption of leathergoods by Italian families is estimated for the first three months compared to the first quarter of last year.
