Environmental focus for Ugandan tannery

Ugandan tannery Leather Industries of Uganda (LIU) is in the final stages of an upgrade of its effluent treatment plant, a $200,000 project that is set to be operational in early September.

Reports from Africa say it will make LIU the first tannery in Uganda - from a total of eight in the country - to own a secondary treatment plant.

LIU general manager Nitin Suvarna said: "Our ultimate goal is to have zero discharge to the environment and this investment is our last lap to getting us there."
