Atlantic Leather puts perforations into fish skins

Specialist Icelandic fish tannery Atlantic Leather has begun developing perforated fish leather to add to its product range.

Managing director, Gunnsteinn Bjo¨rnsson said on announcing the development that he and his team began a trial but without any clear aim in mind. “We had no idea what would come out of our experiments in perforating salmon and wolffish leather, but we’ve been delighted with the results,” he said. “Especially the wolffish leather, which is thicker and stiffer than salmon leather – the perforations make it more flexible and supple. And we think the combination of the perforations and the dappled leather is really cool.”

Atlantic Leather showed off the first results of these experiments at Lineapelle in Bologna in October. The perforated fish leathers attracted the attention of a number of clients and projects are already under way to make bags with the material.

For example, Norwegian leathergoods brand Cala & Jade is working on a collection of bags made from perforated salmon leather.
