Brazilian footwear industry expects uptick in second half
The Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) has stated that between January and May this year, 6,500 jobs were created.

However, in May, 1,100 jobs were lost.

At the end of May, 287,000 people were employed throughout Brazil, 4.5% less than in the same month of 2023.

Abicalçados CEO Haroldo Ferreira said this was expected due to seasonal movement in the footwear industry. “In the last ten years, we only had job creation in May 2022, which was an exceptional year for the industry. Last year, for example, we lost more than 2,300 thousand jobs in that same month,” he said.

He estimated the sector's production should grow between 0.9% and 2.2% in 2024, which means more than 870 million pairs. “There is a positive expectation for the second half of the year, which had a very promising start at the BFSHOW fair, held in May, and which sold very well the spring/summer launches.”

In June, 34 Brazilian footwear brands went on a trade mission to Colombia. The Mission Colombia by Brazilian Footwear event  in Bogotá is expected to generate more than $ 6.4 million in business.

Abicalçados representative Carla Giordani said: “In this edition, we should have a total of more than 350,000 pairs sold. We are currently the second largest supplier of footwear to Colombia, behind only China. There is room to expand our market share, mainly due to our cultural similarities and geographic proximity. For this to happen, however, it is necessary for more companies to participate in actions like this, which in addition to generating significant business, consolidates our position in that market.”
