Jobs growth for Brazilian shoe industry could hit the buffers
With 43,500 new jobs generated in the first ten months of 2022, total employment in Brazil’s footwear sector has now risen to 310,000 direct jobs. This is a 12% increase in the number of employees so far this year.
However, based on statistics provided by the ministry of labour and social security, the number could fall in the final months of the year.
According to the executive president of industry association Abicalçados, Haroldo Ferreira, a decline in employment could result from macroeconomic factors such as a looming recession in Europe and the US, as well as inflation in the global economy.
A slowdown in demand, domestically and internationally, means fewer orders, lower production, and hence less work for factory operatives, he said.
