Sri Lanka - Tanning industry zone proposed
The Ministry of Industries in Sri Lanka has announced plans to establish a special zone in Valaichenai to relocate all tannery industries.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Industries Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara during the opening of the 13th Footwear & Leather event held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo. The zone will cover an area of 50 acres of land that has already been allocated for this purpose. The authorities aim to make the zone operational before the end of the year.
The new leather industry zone aims to reduce the time taken to obtain a tannery industry license, which currently takes 84 weeks.
Speaking to local media, the industries ministry secretary said: “How can an investor wait such a long time,” adding “It is to iron out this issue that we are catering to this zone".
The zone will also accommodate other leather industry activities
