Sri Lanka’s leather and footwear sector ‘should look outwards’

He said: “We save foreign exchange by manufacturing footwear and leather products and seek the government’s intervention to prevent the import of low quality leather products. We need to protect local industrialists as our cost of production is high.”
Mr Hettiarachchy went on to say that demand from a “limited” domestic market is not enough to sustain these industries. He insisted there is a need to “expand our footprint and reach out to the outside world”.
He was speaking in the build-up to the 2019 Sri Lanka Footwear and Leather Fair, which takes place in Colombo from January 25-27. Around 300 companies are expected to take part.
