Sri Lanka’s leather exports plummet

24/03/2022

Commodity exports from Sri Lanka were affected by covid-19, according to figures from the country’s export development board, which show that exports of all commodities had a value of $12.3 billion in 2020, the first year of the pandemic.

This corresponds to a fall of 10% compared to 2016.

However, the decline in exports for the Sri Lankan leather sectors appears to be much more grave.

The export development board said leather industry exports in 2021 had a value of just under $32 million. This represents a drop of more than 300% compared to the figure for 2016, which was almost $140 million.
