Ethiopia: Leather Sector performing well despite challenges

14/11/2023

The Leather and Leather Products Industry Research and Development Centre has reported that in Q1 of the current Ethiopian year, exports of finished and semi-finished leather shoes, bags, gloves, and other products amounted to $7.6 million, with China, India, U.S. and Italy being the main destinations for Ethiopian exports.

Despite being promising, the performance was below the plan due to technological penetration, price fluctuation, limited raw leather collection, and production reduction. To overcome these challenges, 10-year short, medium, and long-term leather development strategies have been formulated to expand local market utilisation, substitute imported chemicals, and increase leather products in destination countries.
