Ethiopia - Leather laboratory boosts hopes for improved quality and health

A new inspection laboratory, built in Ethiopia as part of the Modjo Leather City project, is hoping to enhance the quality of products and consider the health implications of chemical usage.

Built by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the EU-funded laboratory will be open to the factories in the Modjo region, which contribute 60% of the leather production in the country.

With its ideal location, in the Modjo Technical and Vocational Education and Training Centre (TVET), it is also envisaged that prospective students of the leather industry could gain valuable experience in the facility.

It will be the second largest inspection centre after the Leather & Leather Products Industry Research & Development Centre (LPIRDC), in Addis Ababa.
