Real Leather, Stay Different announces Africa competition

29/09/2022

The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) and the African Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) have partnered to launch an African leather design competition.

This event will be part of LHCA’s Real Leather, Stay Different programme and will take place in 2023. The partners said their aim was to help educate the next generation of creatives and “reshape education around the production and use of sustainable leather across Africa”.

The competition is open to people studying design or working in art and design at ALLPI’s design studios. The organisation runs a network of design studios across its ten member countries.

Participants will design apparel, accessories, footwear or furniture using natural materials; 50% or more of the content must be leather.

Shortlisted finalists will be invited to create their design concept at one of the ALLPI design studios. Finalists will present their work during a final showcase event at the All Africa Leather Fair 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

As part of the initiative, a ALLPI will also host a series of workshops in its ten satellite design studios. These workshops will explore fashion, production and sustainability.
