After 13 months of declines, EU car sales finally rise

27/09/2022

Car markets in Italy, Spain, France and Germany have all formed part of a recent sales rebound in the European Union, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

As a result, new car registrations increased in August for the first time in 13 months. However, the 4.4% uptick in registrations in August remained below that of pre-pandemic levels, noted the ACEA.

New registrations in August were up by 9.9% in Italy, 9.1% in Spain, 3.8% in France and 3% in Germany, with 650,305 new vehicles registered in the EU during the month, up by 4.4% compared to August 2021.

So far in 2022, total passenger car sales in the EU have reached almost six million units, which equates to a year-on-year decline of 11.9%, according to Brussels-based ACEA. The slight improvement in August has been overwhelmed by more than a year of continuous negative sales figures.
