Leather shoe factory will pay off for Tanzania

A new leather footwear factory in Zanzibar, Tanzania, that will make shoes for the army will cut by half the bill to taxpayers, as the shoes have been imported, until now.

The government has invested in Zanzibar Quality Tailoring and Zanzibar Leather and Shoe Factory to create jobs and reduce reliance on imports, according to local press.

Tanzania’s vice-president, Philip Mpango, told the factories’ management: "If you produce quality products at competitive prices, consumers will prefer yours over imports.

"We still have a serious problem of environmental pollution; your operations must consider appropriate procedures to conserve the environment."

He praised the initiative, saying it would create business for other industries, such as agriculture and chemicals.
