Gabriela Hearst donates net profits to Afghanistan

Designer Gabriela Hearst, born in Uruguay’s Paysandú department, recently strengthened her commitment to the charity Save the Children by tying her namesake label’s net proceeds from ready-to-wear, handbags and accessories between December 1 and 25 to its fundraising efforts on behalf of Afghan children.

Mrs Hearst has served as a member of the charity’s board since September 2018.

Gabriela Hearst-branded handbags are typically waitlist-only, but in this instance they will be available via click-to-buy on the company’s website for the duration of the period, it said. (On this occasion, the retail locations whose proceeds are linked to Save the Children’s Afghanistan crisis children’s relief fund are limited to the brand’s flagship stores and website.)

In a statement, the designer said: “The children of Afghanistan are in our thoughts and actions this holiday season. Just because we are far doesn’t mean the pain is not close. Hopefully other generous spirits can bring more attention and healing to their situation.”

President and chief executive of Save the Children, Janti Soeripto, added that the brand’s support will allow it to “continue to be a lifeline to Afghan children, providing critical food and medical care, as well as education and shelter for kids and families who have nowhere else to turn.’

The creative, who also manages an inherited 17,000-acre ranch in her home country, has furthermore been artistic director of Richemont-owned, Paris-based fashion house Chloé since December 2020.
