Tannery plans for Senegal
30/07/2021
A development committee in Senegal’s Diourbel region has heard a new tannery in Tourba would be in the best interests of the area and the economy, according to local press.
Oumar Gueye, Minister of Local Authorities, Development and Land Use Planning, told the meeting: “During [Islamic festival] Magal, thousands or even millions of animals of cows, oxen, sheep, goats and camels are used.
“Senegal consumes a lot of leather. These are our slippers, our caps, our belts. Imagine that we could set up a modern tannery in Touba?”
He added that in the area between Touba, Dara Touba and Mekhe, an artisanal industrial zone could create thousands of leathergoods jobs.
He estimated a tannery could make 30 billion CFA profit (£39 million). “The plan must include the creation of a tannery.”
A similar plan was discussed in 2015.
