Hides, skins and leather were the main subject for discussion at a recent meeting between representatives of the government of Senegal and a business delegation from southern China.

Reports from the African country say a Chinese business group, led by the deputy mayor of Guangzhou, Luo Weifeng, met government representatives at a hotel in Dakar on June 10, after visiting an abattoir near the capital and leather and footwear artisans in Mékhé, about 100 kilometres away.

There are hopes in Senegal that Chinese companies will set up leather and footwear production facilities there.

Aly Ngouille Ndiaye, who is Senegal’s minister for mining and engineering, has said Chinese companies want to bring a range of industrial activities to his country. He recently told local media: “China wants to export almost 85 million jobs so that its companies can remain competitive. Of course, we can’t bring all those jobs to Senegal, but if we can convince them to make some investment here, it will help greatly with the development of our country.”
