Dallas-headquartered Southwest Airlines recently onboarded Nashville non-profit Turnip Green Creative Reuse (TGCR), an organisation dedicated to diverting materials from landfill, to its “repurpose with purpose” programme, the airline announced via a statement.

TGCR typically looks to rehome used and waste materials with creatives, teachers and students, in order to extend their use value over time.

As a result of the two organisations’ partnership, almost 55,000 kilograms (or 120,000 pounds) of Southwest-owned leather seat covers will be converted into art kits by TGCR for Nashville public school students.

The non-profit will furthermore host community creative workshops with Southwest’s leather, plus engage local artists to foster the creation new works and products, which will ultimately be selected for public exhibition in a dedicated gallery space.

The airline commented that it “can’t wait” to see the first fruits of the project.
