Traceability will become increasingly important to LWG

21/04/2021
The multi-stakeholder body Leather Working Group (LWG) has introduced material traceability as a scored section in its audits, and plans to increase these requirements in the next versions of the LWG Audit Standard.

This means having limited traceability, and/or exposure to deforestation, will  negatively impact medal ratings.

LWG said: “The LWG’s vision for the future is for 100% deforestation and conversion-free leather, including all globally threatened geographies. This is why providing assurances for leather production, decoupling deforestation and conversion of natural landscapes from the sourcing of raw materials is a central piece of our work.”

WWF,  National Wildlife Federation and other non-governmental organisations are working with LWG to improve supply chain governance.

LWG will identify “positive actors” as this will “highlight the positive examples to drive incremental change in a meaningful and scalable way”.

LWG added: “We are fully open and welcome the opportunity to collaborate and engage with organisations interested in developing solutions to these important issues.”
