Winners announced in Taiwan ‘Real Leather, Stay Different’ competition

The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) brought the first in a series of student design competitions to a successful conclusion in Taiwan in September.

This first iteration of the competition, called ‘Real Leather, Stay Different’, organised in partnership with the Taiwan International Leather Association (TILA), attracted entries from more than 300 students from 15 Taiwan design schools.

Following weeks of public online voting and input from a prestigious panel of judges, 21 winners were selected across four design categories: garments, life craft, accessories and footwear, with gold, silver and bronze winners in each.

Winners of the gold award in the four categories were: Chi-Kit Yu, from She-Te University, in accessories with Gemini; Hsuan-Ting Huang and Tsung-Ying Hsieh, from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, in life craft with their entry, Bloom Chair; Kun-Lin Hsieh, from Shih Chien University Kaohsiung Campus, in footwear for Sculpture (pictured) and, finally, Ong-Jia Ying, also from Shih Chien University Kaohsiung Campus, in the garment category for Drought.

All of the winners presented consumer-ready prototypes of their designs during a product demonstration at the awards ceremony in Taipei.

Three other contests are currently under way in China, Italy and the United Kingdom.
