Porsche-loving designer reveals the other car that inspired his GDA armchair
Milan-based furniture designer Tommaso Spinzi loves his white Porsche so much he keeps it in his living room, but he has revealed that the inspiration for one of his best known pieces, the GDA (Gentleman’s Driving Armchair), is, in fact, another car he owns, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
In conversation recently with Metcha, the social media platform launched by the Leather Naturally campaign in 2019, Mr Spinzi said he found the S600 Mercedes he owns to be stylish, elegant and comfortable to drive. From this, he came up with the idea of turning “this special car design” into a piece of furniture for car lovers to put into their living rooms.
He told Metcha that, while it’s rarely possible for people to jump into a Mercedes and escape somewhere, the GDA makes it possible for his customers to stay in their homes and dream of just such an adventure.
The designer said he loves all “timeless materials”, including leather, adding that he enjoys seeing how these materials, and items made from them, change and become more beautiful with age.
