Food industry boost for Proviera tanning range

Life sciences company SCD Probiotics presented Proviera as a spin-off in 2014. It said tanners who were early adopters of its products, which are based on the action of beneficial microbes, had reported considerable savings in the amount of water and chemicals they needed to make leather. They also reported reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) in their wastewater treatment plants. Some even reported improvements in the quality of their finished leather.
Following this, in 2016, leather chemicals manufacturer Stahl announced that it had secured the rights to distribute Proviera’s Probiotics for Leather range.
At the time of the NSF announcement, Stahl said that the ‘clean label’ development was important for tanners because it would help them sell hide by-products to companies in the food industry.
In a statement, Stahl technical manager, Marcus Breulmann, said: “Hide by-products [often] end up in the food we eat. The raw materials used to make gelatine are clean-labelled to indicate that they are safe to use in the food and beverage industry. We are proud Proviera passed the toxicology assessment and received NSF registration as it means that, besides sustainability, we can offer even more benefits to tanners.”
