The new chairman of India’s Council for Leather Exports, Aqeel Ahmed, has said the country’s leather sector is aiming for export growth of 8-10% in the next two years.

In comments to local media, Mr Ahmed said exports are currently valued at around $6 million. CLE has planned a number of buyer-seller meetings over the coming months, including in the US, Japan and Russia. Its members will also attend the major global leather fairs in pursuit of growth. He mentioned Africa and Latin America as potential markets to explore.

Mr Ahmed also assured members that the leather industry has “the full support” of the Indian government, referencing the Rs 2,600 crore (more than $400 million) investment package that was announced at the start of 2018.
