Mr Ahmed is the managing director of the Florence Shoe Company, based in Chennai in southern India.
Florence, which began production in 1995, now runs its own design studio, has shoe factories in and around Vellore, around 125 kilometres west of Chennai, and its own tannery in Ambur, a further 50 kilometres inland, and produces more than 2 million pairs of shoes per year. It has export customers in markets including the US and Europe.
The Florence Tannery has won gold certification from multi-stakeholder body the Leather Working Group.
Aqeel Ahmed has said in the past that he began working in the leather and footwear industry out of a fascination for the products. This fascination grew into an obsession and he believes he has used this obsession to create “an empire”.
