Electric hypercar to be built in the UK
British electric hypercar maker Dendrobium Automotive has announced that it plans to manufacture its first model, the Dendrobium D-1, in the UK.

The Dendrobium brand was initially launched in early 2017 by Singapore-based electric vehicle specialist Vanda Electrics. The brand’s name is taken from a flower native to the country.

Dendrobium Automotive is now in charge of it and has said it will pursue its plan to produce the D-1 in the UK despite what it called “the current challenges and uncertainties” following the UK’s decision to exit the European Union (‘Brexit’).

Nigel Gordon-Stewart, chairman and CEO of Dendrobium Automotive, said: “Despite the current Brexit difficulties, Dendrobium Automotive is committed to manufacture in Britain.”

He went on to describe the shift towards electric and hybrid cars as “the greatest resolution and evolution in the automotive industry for over 100 years”.

Dendrobium Automotive’s commitment to the UK would seem to be good news for Scottish tanning company Bridge of Weir, who supplied the leather for the interior of the prototype vehicle Vanda Electrics unveiled back in 2017.  In line with Vanda’s commitment to reducing the emissions related to the car, it chose to use Low Carbon Leather from Bridge of Weir.

Bridge of Weir classifies its leather as “low carbon” because it has operated a thermal energy plant at its wet-end tannery since 2010. It takes what was previously sent straight to landfill and converts it into energy for heating the recycled water required in the manufacturing process.
