UNIDO takes steps to support Mongolia’s leather industry

The release of the course in Mongolian is part of a wider UNIDO project to support employment creation in the country. A range of modular courses will be introduced in order to develop the capacities of operators and tanners in Mongolia’s leather value chain. It is hoped this will foster job creation and create income opportunities.
The online course in question, which is free of charge, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of hydrogen sulphide gas and how to introduce preventative and precautionary measures against exposure to it. It is aimed at workers, managers and owners of tanneries and effluent treatment plants.
Participants must score at least 80% on the final test to complete the course, after which a certificate will be issued. UNIDO recommends that tanneries and effluent treatment plants train their staff at least once a year, and that new recruits are immediately trained.
“The online course is very innovative; with the Mongolian language version now available, we can prepare our trainers and train the industry employees,” said Tugjjav Bayarsaikhan, director of the Mongolian Association of Leather Industry. “UNIDO’s professional expertise and the project team’s support highly motivate and empower our members, who operate 30 tanneries and over 100 related production sites in the country.”
