Australia: MLA predicts a tight year for cattle slaughter

08/02/2018
Industry body Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has said cattle supplies are likely to remain “tight” in 2018, with only a small increase expected in slaughter as the national herd rebuild continues.

Its projection for 2018 is that a total of 7.4 million head of cattle will go to slaughter in the course of the year.

Previous predictions were for higher slaughter numbers in 2018 but MLA has said dry conditions in the middle part of 2017 led to higher-than-expected numbers of young cattle being “pushed into feedlots due to lack of decent pasture”. Earlier expectations were that many of these animals would go to slaughter in 2018 instead.
