Raw materials will be part of VW’s attempt to “reclaim” sustainability top spot

Automotive group Volkswagen has said it wants to play a leading role in sustainability in the car industry. In recent comments, its chief executive, Matthias Müller, said he wanted Volkswagen to “reclaim” its place “at the top of prestigious sustainability indices”, which the group lost following  the scandal over carbon emissions in 2015.

Mr Müller said at the start of a two-day group environmental conference in Wolfsburg at the start of October that Volkswagen remains committed to helping mitigate climate change and improve air quality in cities around the world.

He added: “We are broadening our interpretation of environmental sustainability; it is not only what comes out of the tailpipe that matters. We must address the entire lifecycle of mobility, from energy generation and raw materials down to recycling.”

The chief executive went on to say that, by 2025, Volkswagen will use 45% less energy and water compared to 2010 levels, while also cutting volatile organic compound emissions.
