Eid hide haul highlights reduced tanning capacity in Turkey

In contrast to their counterparts in Pakistan, tanners in Turkey expressed no concerns in the build-up to the recent Eid al-Adha about finding cash to acquire the large volume of hides and skins that becomes available in most Muslim countries at the time of the festival.

However, they were still not optimistic about being able to take full advantage of the 3.5 to 4 million hides and skins traders had to sell following the festival owing to Turkey’s reduced production capacity.

They said they were likely to be able to process a proportion of the sheepskins only as far as crust.
