Smit & zoon to open further application labs

The chief executive of leather chemicals manufacturer Smit & zoon, Hans van Haarst, has explained the thinking behind the company’s decision to open a new applications laboratory in Brazil. The facility officially opened in Novo Hamburgo in July.

He said that, at one time, Smit & zoon “ran everything” from its base in the Netherlands but that it’s strategy now is to be closer to its customers and that opening application laboratories are part of that strategy.

Mr van Haarst said: “This means we need infrastructure in countries that have a significant leather market or significant market potential and we have the intention of opening further application laboratories in locations including China and India. Speed is very important now and it wouldn’t make sense for us to send hides from a customer in China, say, to run trials on them in the Netherlands and then send them back.”
