Australia’s deputy PM announces funding for livestock waste project

Livestock farmers in Australia are to receive funding worth US$4.5 million to help them develop waste-to-energy projects. Deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, announced the development during a visit to the Australian Lamb Company in Colac, Victoria, in early June.

After the announcement, industry body Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) said the funding will help farmers and meat companies develop technologies and business models that will allow them to capture a market opportunity worth more than US$75 million per year.

Plans centre on using waste material from livestock farms to make energy or fertilisers. This would generate extra money for farmers and lower the amount of money they have to pay to dispose of waste, which MLA estimates at more than $150 million per year Australia-wide.

Waste-to-energy projects can also help lower the carbon footprint of livestock farming.
