However, there are a number of small tanneries operating in the country, mainly around the northern town of Khulm. These tend to be family owned, work in small cooperatives and specialise in goat skins.
Local press said $6.3 million has been invested into the new tannery in Herat Industrial Park and will provide employment for hundreds of local people.
In 2014 it was estimated Afghanistan had 27 million livestock, but that only 9% of the skins were processed domestically. Most go over the border to Pakistan.
The Afghanistan Investment Support Agency said between 80,000 and 120,000 square feet of wet blue is processed in the country per year (2014 figure).
