Tanneries close in Pakistan as raw material supplies fail

A lack of raw materials has forced small and medium-sized tanneries across Pakistan to cease production, the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has claimed.

PTA chairman, Khurshid Alam, called on the government to make a temporary ban on exports of live animals and of wet blue permanent. Industry sources say 20,000 live animals are being smuggled out of the country every day, especially to Iran and Afghanistan.
