Abicalçados laments JBS’ impact on footwear

The head of the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados) has expressed his concern about how the scandal at JBS will affect companies in the run up to two big shoe shows.

Heitor Klein said the uncertainty had affected the Brazilian real, which was already fluctuating against the dollar.

This could cause problems for domestic companies attending the International Leather and Footwear Exhibition (SICC) (May 22 to 24) in Gramado and the International Fashion Fair In Footwear and Accessories in Francal (July 2 and 5), he said.

“We hope the situation will be timely and fleeting and that the market will calm down as soon as all the necessary explanations are given,” he added.

On May 19, we reported that seven senior executives from meatpacking and tannery group JBS and from parent company J&F Investimentos have “entered into a plea-bargain agreement with the federal public prosecutor’s office” and that this plea-bargain has been ratified by Brazil’s supreme court.
