Turkey’s boom in second-hand tanning machinery

Tannery closures in Europe and other parts of the world have given rise in Turkey to a resurgence in reconditioning and selling second-hand machinery.

Industry commentators there said recently that at least six companies dedicated to this activity are now in operation in Izmir and Istanbul. They import second-hand fleshing, shaving and splitting machines and other tanning technology, recondition them and sell them to leather manufacturers.

They have calculated, for example, that a new Italian-made splitting machine that might cost between €100,000 and €120,000 new can be picked up second-hand for around €40,000 and, after reconditioning, sell for €70,000.

These companies have picked up business from tanners outside as well as inside Turkey; they have recorded sales in Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other parts of the global leather industry.
