Enormous growth in Brazilian crust exports continues

Brazilian tanners have exported more material in the first seven months of 2016 than in the corresponding period last year in terms of volume, but export revenues have declined.

From January to July this year, Brazil exported raw hides, wet blue, crust and finished leather with a total area of almost 115 million square-metres. This represents an increase of 9% compared to the same months last year.

Revenues from these exports over the seven-month period in 2016 were just over $1.2 billion, which is 15.6% down compared to the same months in 2015.

In volume terms, exports of wet blue have increased year on year by 1.5%; wet blue accounted for 30.3% of the total.

Finished leather exports were up by 11.3% year on year and accounted for 57.1% of the total.

The biggest growth, once again, is in exports of crust, which in the first seven months of 2016 accounted for 12.6% of the total and registered an enormous year-on-year increase of 126.2%.
