Namibian beef granted access to US market

The US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has confirmed that Namibia is eligible to export beef products into the country, a statement from the US embassy in the country’s capital Windhoek confirmed. Shipments could start as soon as September.

Namibia plans to export 860 tonnes of beef to the US in the first year, with the amount rising to 5,700 tonnes in five years. This would represent 0.07% of total US beef imports. Only 33 countries are authorised to export meat to the US.

The FSIS said the laws, regulations and inspection systems within the Namibian beef industry had been comprehensively reviewed and the country would now be able to export boneless raw beef products to the US.

“We are delighted. It is a big market. We have been negotiating with them for a long time. It's now up to the farmers to take advantage of the situation,” said John Mutorwa, Namibia’s minister of agriculture.
