Research team in Argentina excited about enzyme technology

A team from the Leather Centre at Argentina’s National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI) is examining how enzymes from fungi could be used to reduce the environmental impact of the unhairing of bovine hides.

The group of specialists leading the investigation has trialled the use of these non-harmful enzymes partially in place of sodium sulfide. Researchers believe that this could lessen the amount of hydrogen sulfide released during unhairing and result in a smaller environmental footprint.

Enzymes have long been used in the unhairing of hides, primarily as a catalyst alongside sodium sulfide, but the team in Argentina is now targeting a 50% reduction in the use of sulphur. In the long-term it believes that the enzymes could replace sodium completely in the unhairing process in tanneries.
